UK energy company releases details of its first solar energy scheme to produce 30 MW of sustainable energy.

The commencement of a solar project that will produce 30 MW of clean energy has been announce by energy company SSE. It is the company’s first solar venture in England and comes as part of a £12.5 Bn investment program, the aim of which is to fuel the transition towards net zero.

The 77-acre solar farm will be located at Little Pastures, near Evesham in Worcestershire and forecast to be completed in late 2023. Once finished the site should have the capacity to power 9,400 homes.

The rights to the solar project were purchased from the development company Stark Energy.

The first 50 MW battery storage project in Wiltshire was recently announced by SSE’s energy team, who are developing prospects of over 1 GW of solar and battery storage technology.

“We see solar as a key complementary technology to SSE’s existing portfolio of low carbon infrastructure such as wind and hydro and one that can power us towards net zero,” said Richard Cave-Bigley, SSE Sector Director of Distributed Generation and Storage. “Last year we announced our first battery storage project, and we are fully focused on developing over 1GW of solar and battery technology.

“We look forward to being able to announce further solar and battery projects during 2022.”

Viewing solar energy technology as complementary to other forms of renewable energy technology, the SSE group invest approximately £7 Mn a day on critical low-carbon infrastructure to aid the adaptation to net zero.
