A range of compostable plates and containers made from sugarcane has been awarded GreenScreen certification.
Eco-Products, a Colorado-based food packaging manufacturer, has been awarded the certification for its Vanguard product line. Produced from sugarcane, the products use an innovative process to greaseproof their containers without the use of harmful chemicals.
The GreenScreen certification, which was developed by Clean Production Action and the Center for Environmental Health, guarantees that no harmful or environmentally unsound chemicals are used in the manufacture of the Vanguard product range. The certification evaluates every chemical used in the manufacturing process.
The Vanguard product line is fully plant-based and compostable, as well as being designed to be just as effective as conventional paper or polystyrene food packaging. The initial line includes plates, bowls and clamshell boxes. Eco-Products plans to expand the line soon.
It is the first time a food service product line has been certified by GreenScreen.
“We are very excited to earn GreenScreen Silver Certification for our Vanguard line of compostable products,” said Ian Jacobson, President of Eco-Products. “Finding an alternative formula to replace PFAS (a type of material sometimes known as a “forever chemical”) was our top priority. But we also wanted to ensure our products did not contain other chemicals of high concern or known regrettable substitutes.”
