As Earth Day reaches its milestone 50th Anniversary, the world faces enormous challenges from climate change, biodiversity loss, air and water pollution and ecosystem degradation. As we approach April 2020, the time is now for a new environmental paradigm. As it was in 1970, Earth Day 2020 can be the catalyst that sparks a movement for worldwide collaboration, cooperation and commitment to save the planet. 

In the wake of this anniversary, Earth Day Network initiated Artists for the Earth, a campaign to bring arts to the forefront of the environmental movement. 

Overall, the Artists for the Earth campaign highlights the talented artists that make our planet greener, cleaner and more sustainable. It provides an opportunity for creative minds to join the largest global environmental movement and gain recognition for their contributions.

The Artists for Earth Gallery page displays works of art from those who stand with us for positive change (those who sign up through this registration page). These works center on the environment, and by creating art — playing music, painting pictures, writing poetry— artists personalize what is happening to the planet. Whether in subtle or dramatic ways, art makes sense of our individual experiences — and that of others.  

By working with arts organizations and artists everywhere, Artists for the Earth engages the public in a conversation about our planet in crisis. Art operates in ways that science alone cannot. While facts and figures are impersonal, art can bridge the gap between climate science and emotion by creating a narrative and a human story. 

The greatest aspect of art, however, is its ability to create community. There is a shared appreciation for the beauty and wonder of nature, of how it can be both a source of inspiration and awe. As we look at the world collectively, the lens widens on the view toward environmental action. Then community becomes part of the solution through a shared sense of purpose.  

Art, quietly or defiantly, serves as a dynamic expression of hope for the future.

By supporting the community that art creates, Artists for the Earth will build consensus, intensify the will to effect change and jumpstart the inspiration to act to protect the Earth.
