Supporting Communities Through Decarbonisation
SP Energy Networks’ £5 million Transmission Net Zero Fund is transforming decarbonisation ambitions into reality for communities across central and southern Scotland. The fund, launched in 2022, provides financial backing for projects targeting net zero emissions, particularly in vulnerable areas at risk of being left behind. From electric car clubs to energy-efficient building retrofits, this initiative is catalyzing meaningful climate action.
Fuelling Community Transformation
To date, £3.7 million has been awarded to 27 organizations, funding projects predicted to save 28,904 tonnes of CO2e. This is equivalent to driving around the Earth over 7,000 times in a standard car. The initiative has supported 16 tailored workshops and feasibility studies, enabling communities to refine their climate action strategies.

“From innovative low-carbon heating solutions to electrifying community transport, these projects support the most vulnerable members of our communities and enable a more inclusive pathway to net zero.”
Innovative Projects Receiving Funding
- Agile City – Glasgow’s Glue Factory Transformation
Awarded £188,000, Agile City will retrofit the historic Glue Factory into a ‘micro-power station,’ generating more energy than it consumes through thermal improvements and photovoltaic (PV) panels. This space will host workshops, events, and training programs, engaging 4,500 participants in its first two years.
“Buildings that supported the industrial revolution in Glasgow can now lead the green revolution,” said Rob Morrison, Agile City Director.
The project also introduces a net zero training program in collaboration with Built Environment – Smarter Transformation (BE-ST) and City of Glasgow College. - East Ayrshire Council – Electric Car Club
A £215,400 grant will fund a new electric car club serving Cumnock, New Cumnock, and Muirkirk. The project includes solar PV car charging hubs, a digital booking app, electric vehicles, and adapted e-bikes for individuals with disabilities.

“This project not only promotes green travel but also creates much-needed local job opportunities.” - Building Futures Galloway – Historic Town Hall Retrofit
With an £80,000 grant, Building Futures Galloway will retrofit Whithorn’s 19th-century town hall. Using air-source heat pumps and traditional lime-based insulation, the project combines heritage preservation with sustainability. Local youth will gain hands-on experience through a skills training program.
