BRITA Research Shows Challenges of Sustainability in Hospitality

Recent research by BRITA Professional has found that as consumer demand grows, hospitality businesses are still facing numerous barriers to going green.

Recent research conducted by BRITA Professional, founded over 50 years ago and now a household name in water filtration products, shows the issue of sustainability is at the forefront of the hospitality sector. For restaurants, hotels, tourism-related services, and other hospitality businesses, the implementation of green practices and alternatives is being restricted by numerous barriers.

As customer retention is now more crucial than ever, there is more pressure to limit expense and company outgoings. On top of this, BRITA’s report highlights that the improvement of green and environmental practices can seem more challenging.

Sustainability in the hospitality industry is not a new concept,” explains Steve Buckmaster, Director of Sales at BRITA Professional. “But it’s encouraging to see from the research that the industry is dedicated to creating a more sustainable supply chain that powers a circular economy.”

The report, which gathered results from 600 decision-makers working in the sector, found the following: 51% of hospitality businesses believe a greater choice of sustainable suppliers would facilitate their sustainability goals; 39% think having more available budget would support them to achieve their environmental goals; and 35% agree that increasing the longevity of equipment is the third key area which would help them to become more sustainable.

The full research results will be published in a new insight report from BRITA Professional. The company points out that the research is part of their wider ‘Expertise Unfiltered’ campaign, which aims to empower those in the hospitality sector by reducing environmental impacts of their businesses with informational tools.

“Through our ‘Expertise Unfiltered’ campaign, we hope to support hospitality businesses as they juggle the challenges of post-pandemic life with achieving their environmental goals,” said Mr. Buckmaster.

BRITA Professional claim that 100% of their operational waste is diverted from landfill, and that they aim to recycle filters used in BRITA water filtration products. The recycled filters, BRITA note, could find a new life in resin products, from new BRITA filters to plastic garden furniture.
