Field Brings New Battery Storage Capacity Online in Germany and the UK

Battery storage developer Field has brought two new sites into commercial operation, including its first operational project in continental Europe. The milestones mark an early step in the company’s 2026 delivery pipeline as it continues to expand energy storage capacity across the UK and Europe.

The new projects include a site in Waldkappel, Hesse in Germany and a second site in Whitebirk, Lancashire in the UK. Both facilities are now supplying flexibility to their respective energy systems.

First German Project Begins Operations

The Waldkappel site has a capacity of 16MW / 33MWh and represents Field’s first battery storage project to enter active operation outside the UK. The development brings new storage capacity to the German grid as the country continues to integrate larger volumes of renewable electricity.

Battery storage is increasingly seen as a key part of power system infrastructure. By storing electricity when supply is high and releasing it when demand increases, storage assets help stabilise electricity networks and support the expansion of renewable generation.

Field’s expansion into Germany reflects wider growth in the European storage market. Countries across the continent are increasing investment in grid flexibility as they work to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and maintain reliable power systems.

Whitebirk Site Energised in Lancashire

Field’s Whitebirk site in Lancashire has also entered commercial operation after being energised at the beginning of March. The facility has a capacity of 25MW / 50MWh and will be managed using the company’s proprietary optimisation software.

The site will operate using Field’s in-house optimisation platform, Gaia. The software analyses market signals and grid conditions to determine when storage assets should charge or discharge electricity.

Gaia has already been operating at Field’s Oldham battery storage facility for more than a year. The platform is now being introduced across additional projects within the company’s portfolio.

By using real-time market data, optimisation systems allow battery sites to respond quickly to changes in electricity supply and demand. This can improve system flexibility and support grid stability as renewable generation increases.

Building on a Year of Project Delivery

The latest projects follow a year of activity for Field in 2025. Construction began at two new battery storage developments in Scotland during the year.

The Holmston project in South Ayrshire and the Drum Farm development in Moray have a combined capacity of 100MW / 200MWh. These projects form part of Field’s expanding pipeline of energy storage assets across the UK.

The company also brought its Auchteraw site in the Scottish Highlands into commercial operation during the summer. That facility has a capacity of 50MW / 100MWh.

These developments form part of a wider effort to increase energy storage capacity across Britain’s electricity system. As renewable generation grows, storage assets are expected to play a larger role in balancing supply and demand.

Strengthening Energy Security and Grid Flexibility

Energy storage is increasingly recognised as a critical component of modern electricity systems. Battery sites can absorb excess renewable power when generation is high and supply it back to the grid during periods of peak demand.

This flexibility can reduce pressure on electricity networks, limit curtailment of renewable energy and improve overall system reliability. It can also help reduce reliance on gas-fired power plants that are often used to balance supply fluctuations.
