
Every office fit-out generates waste. Strip out an old floor, pull down ceiling tiles, replace partition walls, and the skips fill up fast. For decades, that cycle ran on virgin materials with little thought given to where they came from or where they’d end up. But procurement teams and fit-out contractors are starting to think differently.
Post-consumer recycled PET felt, reclaimed timber, and low-VOC composites are showing up on specification sheets where mineral wool and fibreglass used to be the default. And the shift isn’t driven by idealism alone. These materials perform well, cost less to dispose of, and help projects hit the sustainability benchmarks that landlords and tenants increasingly demand. Let’s take a closer look at what’s actually changing on site and why it matters.
What’s Replacing Conventional Materials
Three material categories are doing most of the heavy lifting in this shift.
Recycled PET Felt
This is the biggest mover. Made from post-consumer plastic bottles that are shredded, spun into polyester fibre, and pressed into dense panels, it’s now widely used for wall coverings, ceiling panels, screens, and acoustic baffles.
A typical panel uses between 45 and 60 plastic bottles per square metre, depending on thickness, and produces around 75% fewer carbon emissions than traditional alternatives like mineral wool. It’s also free of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which means it doesn’t off-gas into enclosed spaces where people sit for eight or more hours a day.
Reclaimed Wood and Timber
Reclaimed timber is turning up in feature walls, desk dividers, shelving, and reception areas. Sourced from demolition projects, old warehouses, or sustainably managed end-of-life stock, it avoids the carbon cost of felling, processing, and transporting new wood.
It can also be denser and more stable than freshly milled alternatives, particularly when it contains old-growth timber with tighter grain, though quality varies depending on the source and species.
Low-VOC Composites
Made from agricultural waste, recycled paper, or bio-based resins, these composites are replacing MDF and chipboard in joinery and partitioning. They keep formaldehyde and other irritants out of the air, which contributes to better indoor air quality scores under wellness certification frameworks.
Where Embodied Carbon Fits In
Every material that goes into an office carries a carbon footprint long before anyone switches on a light. This is its embodied carbon: the emissions from extracting raw materials, manufacturing products, transporting them, and eventually disposing of them.
According to the UK Green Building Council, embodied carbon accounts for around 20% of the UK built environment’s total emissions, and it remains unregulated. While operational energy use has fallen thanks to better insulation and LED lighting, embodied carbon has been far slower to come down.
That said, pressure is building. In March 2025, the UKGBC’s Whole Life Carbon Progress Report found the industry is cutting embodied carbon at roughly half the pace needed to stay on track, and the launch of the UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard in late 2024 introduced the first unified, science-based limits on both operational and embodied carbon for verified projects.
For fit-out teams, the message is clear. Choosing recycled or reclaimed products over virgin ones can cut a project’s upfront embodied carbon significantly. When the UKGBC refurbished its own London headquarters, it achieved an embodied carbon footprint 22% below a comparable standard fit-out, using a combination of reused materials, recycled-content furniture and panels, and low-carbon alternatives across the specification.
This matters for procurement managers who need to report against Scope 3 targets or prove progress towards net zero. Every tonne of recycled PET that replaces virgin mineral fibre is a tonne that shows up positively in the numbers.
How Recycled Panels Support Acoustic Comfort
One of the biggest practical advantages of recycled PET panels is that they do two jobs at once. They divert waste from landfill while directly improving office acoustics by absorbing the reflected sound that makes open-plan spaces noisy and distracting.
Open-plan layouts, glass partitions, and hard ceilings reflect sound, creating the background noise that most workers find distracting. PET felt panels absorb sound effectively, with many products achieving Class A absorption under BS EN ISO 11654.
This dual function makes them a strong fit for both BREEAM and WELL certification. BREEAM rewards responsible material sourcing, recycled content, and waste reduction. WELL, meanwhile, includes a dedicated Sound section that sets maximum background noise levels and reverberation times for different workspace zones. Specifying recycled PET panels helps a project score points in both frameworks with a single product choice.
The Plastic Waste Connection
It’s worth stepping back to look at the supply chain. According to a House of Commons Library briefing on plastic waste, domestic recycling of plastic waste in the UK overtook exports for the first time in 2021. At the time of the briefing’s publication, around 73% of plastic bottles produced in 2020/21 were being collected from households for recycling.
But collection is only half the problem. Those bottles need somewhere useful to go. Turning them into acoustic panels, desk screens, and ceiling tiles creates a genuine closed-loop application, one where waste becomes a high-value product instead of sitting in a bale waiting for an export market.
For procurement managers writing sustainability reports, this is a concrete story to tell. You can trace the material from bottle bank to office wall, quantify how many bottles each square metre diverts, and link it directly to the finished workspace.
What Certifications to Look For
Not every product labelled “recycled” is equal. When assessing materials for a fit-out, look for products with verified Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), which set out the full lifecycle carbon impact using standardised methodology.
Products rated under BS EN ISO 11654 will carry a sound absorption class from A (highest absorption) to E, with their acoustic performance independently tested. You may also see a Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC) on product data sheets, which serves a similar function under American testing standards. And for broader project certification, check that your chosen materials carry the right credits under BREEAM’s Mat 03 (Responsible Sourcing) and WELL’s Sound concept.
Asking suppliers for this documentation early in the specification process saves time later and prevents greenwashing claims from slipping through.
What Procurement Teams Should Specify Next
The move towards recycled materials in office interiors is being driven by hard numbers: tightening carbon budgets, rising waste disposal costs, and growing expectations from tenants and investors that workplaces will perform against measurable sustainability criteria. Recycled PET panels that absorb sound and divert plastic waste, reclaimed timber that cuts embodied carbon and adds character, and low-VOC composites that improve air quality are all doing real, verifiable work.
For fit-out teams and procurement managers, the question isn’t whether to specify these materials. It’s which ones meet the performance, aesthetic, and certification requirements for the project in front of them. The good news is that the range, quality, and supply chain reliability of recycled interior products has improved sharply in recent years, meaning there are fewer compromises to make than there were even five years ago.
