Arvind Limited has opened its first manufacturing unit in Uttar Pradesh, a greenfield garment facility in Varanasi inaugurated by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. Developed with an investment of approximately ₹150 crore, the 5.5-acre site has around 65,000 sq. ft. of built-up area and a stated revenue potential of Rs 250 Cr. The plant is expected to create more than 1,000 jobs, predominantly for women, while producing essential knitwear using automated sewing technologies. The inauguration was attended by Smt. Anandiben Patel, Governor of Uttar Pradesh, Shri Yogi Adityanath, Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, government officials and industry leaders.

A New Uttar Pradesh Base

The Varanasi facility expands Arvind’s garmenting operations into Uttar Pradesh and adds capacity to India’s textile and apparel manufacturing base. It will forward integrate knitted fabric manufactured in-house by Arvind, linking fabric production with garment manufacturing within the company’s operations.

The development also supports Arvind’s strategic direction towards vertical integration. The company expects the facility to strengthen its offering for European and UK markets opened through recently signed free trade agreements, while building on its existing customer relationships.

Sanjay Lalbhai, Chairman at Arvind Limited, said:

“We are deeply honoured to have the Hon’ble Prime Minister inaugurate this facility. The Lalbhai Group’s journey of 130 years began in 1897 and has remained closely intertwined with India’s industrial progress. Inspired by the institution-building vision of Shri Kasturbhai Lalbhai, we have consistently invested in enterprises that contribute to economic growth, employment generation and nation-building. We are particularly proud that this investment will create large-scale employment opportunities, with women expected to form a significant part of the workforce, reflecting the transformative power of Nari Shakti in driving India’s growth story. We are proud to partner in India’s development journey through investment, innovation and job creation.”

Employment And Local Activity

Employment is central to the project’s stated local contribution. More than 1,000 direct roles are expected at the plant, with women forming a substantial part of the workforce. Arvind also anticipates secondary activity across supply chains, logistics and local services as operations develop.

The company has established dedicated worker hostels and plans to expand residential infrastructure as the facility grows. This provision sits alongside its focus on workforce welfare, while the plant is also expected to contribute to skill development in Varanasi and the wider Uttar Pradesh apparel ecosystem.

Punit Lalbhai, Vice Chairman at Arvind Limited, said:

“India is at an inflection point in its apparel manufacturing journey. With a strong textile value chain, a skilled workforce and growing global demand for diversified sourcing, the country is well positioned to emerge as a preferred manufacturing destination for the world. Sustained investments in capacity, productivity, sustainability and workforce development will be critical to realising this opportunity. We are happy that this facility will contribute to local economy with multiplier impact through local employment generation, local sourcing of goods and services and a secondary impact on the ecosystem of moving workforce back home through reverse migration. At Arvind, we remain committed to contributing to this growth story by building globally competitive manufacturing capabilities that create long-term value and employment.”

Automated Production Systems

Designed as a modern manufacturing hub, the facility combines advanced automated production systems with a focus on efficiency, sustainability and workforce welfare. Automated sewing technologies will be used to manufacture essential knitwear, supporting productivity, consistent quality and scalable operations.

For a company spanning textiles, apparel, advanced materials, environmental solutions, telecom and omnichannel commerce, the new unit creates a direct connection between its fibre-to-fashion capabilities and garment production. The investment adds a manufacturing presence in a state seeking to build its industrial and skills base.

Kulin Lalbhai, Vice Chairman at Arvind Limited, said:

“Uttar Pradesh is rapidly establishing itself as one of India’s most attractive manufacturing destinations. The state’s focus on infrastructure development, industrial growth, connectivity and skill creation is enabling businesses to expand with confidence and scale. As the textile and apparel sector continues to grow, Uttar Pradesh is well positioned to play a pivotal role in strengthening India’s manufacturing ecosystem, creating employment opportunities and attracting long-term investment.”

Building Apparel Capacity

The Varanasi plant brings together employment, automation and integrated textile production in a single new operation. Its proposed workforce, local sourcing opportunities and planned worker accommodation give the project a practical role beyond garment output alone.

As Arvind develops the facility, its contribution will be measured through the delivery of jobs, manufacturing capacity and local economic activity set out at launch. The project offers a substantial new base for the company’s garmenting business and for Uttar Pradesh’s textile and apparel sector.
