Henry Brothers Earns Platinum Sustainability Recognition for Fifth Year

Henry Brothers has once again demonstrated its sustainability leadership, securing Platinum Level in Business in the Community’s (BITC) 2024 Northern Ireland Environmental Benchmarking Survey. This marks the fifth consecutive year the Magherafelt-based contractor has achieved this prestigious recognition, underscoring its commitment to embedding environmental best practices across its operations.

A Legacy of Sustainability

The Northern Ireland Environmental Benchmarking Survey evaluates how businesses integrate environmental practices into their strategies and operations. Achieving Platinum Level reflects Henry Brothers’ steadfast dedication to sustainable development—a commitment that Ian Henry MBE, CR Director at Henry Brothers, says has been part of the company’s ethos for nearly three decades.

“Sustainability has been at the heart of our operations for nearly three decades, with industry-leading environmental practices ingrained across our business long before it was a legal requirement,” said Mr. Henry.
He added, “Our ambitious yet achievable plan to become carbon-free by 2050 is well underway, with significant steps taken to build on our reputation as a responsible business making a lasting, positive impact on the environment and our communities.”

This latest accolade follows the company’s earlier receipt of the King’s Award for Enterprise for Sustainable Development, further cementing its role as a leader in environmentally responsible business practices.

Insights from the Benchmarking Survey

Kieran Harding, Managing Director at BITC, explained the significance of the survey, noting that it serves as both an assessment tool and a driver for improvement.

“The Survey is a self-disclosure exercise that offers organisations a way to be externally assessed and scored on their environmental efforts and performance,” said Mr. Harding.
He highlighted how the accompanying Gap Analysis Report enables participants to identify areas requiring action and recognise areas of strength.

Keelin McCone, Head of Environment at BITC, shared key findings from the 2024 survey, emphasizing the increasing awareness of climate risks among Northern Ireland businesses.
“We can see that businesses in NI recognise that an increase in the likelihood of extreme weather events due to climate change poses significant challenges to operations, supply chains, and long-term financial stability,” said Ms. McCone.

Taking Action on Climate Risks and Biodiversity

The survey revealed that 89% of companies have identified climate risks to their business, with just over half having mitigation plans in place. Additionally, 65% of businesses reported taking steps to improve biodiversity by making it a core element of their ESG strategies.

Companies are engaging with stakeholders along the value chain, from subcontractors to local communities and schools. Activities include cleaning up local green areas, providing bird boxes and planters, and distributing wildflower seeds to support biodiversity.

A Broader Commitment

Henry Brothers’ sustainability achievements go beyond benchmarks and awards. The company’s proactive approach to reducing environmental impacts includes a long-term strategy to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. This commitment is a cornerstone of its operations, aligning with global goals for climate action and community betterment.

Ben Hall, Area Director for Morgan Sindall Construction, emphasized the importance of creating a positive local impact. “We look forward to undertaking social value initiatives that benefit the people of Bradford, ensuring this new facility has a positive impact on the city way ahead of opening.”

Looking Ahead

Henry Brothers’ recognition through the Northern Ireland Environmental Benchmarking Survey reflects a growing trend among businesses prioritizing sustainability and environmental responsibility. As more organizations adopt proactive strategies, such initiatives not only safeguard the planet but also drive innovation, resilience, and long-term success.
