The Algarve resort continues to strengthen its commitment to responsible luxury, from 100% renewable electricity and major CO₂ reductions to supporting children, families and animal shelters across the region
Algarve, Portugal – August 2026: W Algarve has been awarded the prestigious Green Key certification for the third consecutive year, recognising the resort’s continued commitment to environmental responsibility, sustainable operations and positive impact within the local Algarve community.
One of the hospitality industry’s leading environmental certifications, Green Key recognises properties that meet rigorous standards across areas including energy and water conservation, waste reduction, responsible sourcing, environmental management and guest engagement.
For W Algarve, retaining the certification for a third consecutive year reflects an ongoing approach to sustainability that extends throughout the resort, combining behind-the-scenes operational changes with initiatives that allow guests to enjoy the bold, playful W experience while reducing its environmental footprint.
W Algarve operates using 100% renewable electricity and has installed 144 rooftop water heater panels, helping the resort avoid approximately 185 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually, the equivalent of around 36 hectares of forest.
The property also offers 21 electric vehicle charging stations and has eliminated the majority of single-use plastics, replacing them with more responsible alternatives including glass bottles, paper containers and filtered water stations.

Smart energy-saving systems have been incorporated throughout the resort, including motion-sensor lighting, automatic air-conditioning shut-off when windows are opened and dual-flush toilets. These initiatives allow the property to reduce unnecessary energy and water consumption while maintaining the comfort and seamless guest experience for which W Algarve is known.
Further initiatives include W Algarve’s participation in Nespresso’s capsule-recycling programme, with the resort recycling 160kg of coffee capsules during 2025. The wider programme contributed towards the donation of 107,500kg of rice, equivalent to approximately 2.15 million meals, to families supported by Banco Alimentar. W Algarve also contributes directly to the food bank and its work supporting people in need.
Beyond its environmental initiatives, W Algarve extends its commitment to responsible hospitality into the local community through ongoing support for organisations across the Algarve.
The resort supports CASA Albufeira on a monthly basis through donations of clothing and hotel linen, helping the organisation in its work supporting vulnerable people within the local community.
W Algarve also works with Refúgio Aboim Ascensão in Faro, donating toys, clothing, shoes and beds for children supported by the institution. Beyond material donations, the resort organises experiences for the children, including lunches at the hotel and opportunities to enjoy W Algarve’s playground and facilities.
Animal welfare is another focus of the resort’s community programme. Each year, W Algarve donates food and towels to Tiny Shelter in Guia, which cares for more than 90 dogs.

Christian Humbert, General Manager of W Algarve, said:
“Receiving Green Key certification for the third consecutive year is something our entire team is incredibly proud of. For us, responsible hospitality is not about one initiative or one certification; it is about making better choices consistently across every part of the resort.
“From the energy we use and the way we manage water and waste to the organisations we support within our local community, we want our impact on the Algarve to be a positive one. Our guests should never have to choose between an extraordinary experience and travelling more responsibly, and our goal is to continue proving that the two can exist together.”
Green Key is an internationally recognised environmental certification for tourism establishments, with participating properties required to meet strict criteria and undergo regular assessment. The programme encourages hospitality businesses to continuously improve their environmental performance while educating and involving employees, guests and suppliers.
W Algarve’s third consecutive certification builds on the resort’s wider commitment to combining the distinctive energy and experience of the W brand with a more responsible approach to luxury hospitality.
Set above the dramatic cliffs and beaches of southern Portugal, W Algarve brings the W brand’s bold approach to hospitality to the Algarve through contemporary design, destination-led dining, wellness and entertainment, all set against one of Europe’s most celebrated coastlines.
