Penrhos Spirits has achieved Certified B Corporation status, earning a B Impact Assessment score of 86.8, compared with a median score of 50.9 for businesses completing the assessment. The Herefordshire family farm distillery joins the B Corp community after verification by B Lab, with performance assessed across governance, workers, community, environment and customers. The certification recognises an operating model built around fruit waste prevention, farm-grown botanicals and lower-carbon packaging. It arrives as Penrhos prepares to launch its limited edition Wonky Blueberry Gin on 1 September, marking the rescue of more than one million blueberries since 2019.
Independent Verification For Sustainability
Founded in 2018 by fruit farmers, Penrhos operates from a converted 250-year-old cow shed on its Herefordshire farm. The distillery uses raspberries, blueberries, cucumbers and apples that are unsuitable for supermarket shelves because of their shape or appearance, creating spirits from produce that might otherwise enter the waste stream.
The B Corp assessment required the business to provide evidence supporting its claims, covering matters including packaging, supply chain practices, treatment of employees and its relationship with the local area. For a small independent drinks producer, the result offers third-party validation of practices Penrhos says have been central to its business since launch.
Charlie Turner, co-founder of Penrhos Spirits, said:
“Achieving BCorp as a small business in the alcohol industry is a big moment for us and we hope it shows the commitment we have as a brand into sustainability and the environment at such an important time. It confirms our core sustainability credentials and it puts us – a small independent producer – alongside some of the biggest global drinks brands. We know the industry is full of green claims and this certification is an independent guarantee of our genuine commitment to our ongoing sustainability mission.”
Fruit Waste At The Source
Penrhos’s supply model begins on the farm, where cherry and apple orchards sit alongside blueberry and strawberry planting. The company combines orchard and farm botanicals with grain spirit and its own natural water, while placing imperfect fruit at the heart of its gin production.
The newly certified business says it has rescued over one million blueberries from waste. Its upcoming Wonky Blueberry Gin is intended to mark that milestone, alongside the #SaveTheBlueberries campaign, which encourages consumers to freeze soft blueberries and use them as ice cubes in a gin and tonic.
Penrhos cites research conducted by Find Out Now in July 2026 among 1,012 nationally representative GB adults, estimating that UK households discard more than 12,000 tonnes of fresh blueberries each year. The company compares that volume with enough fruit to fill Battersea Power Station’s turbine hall from floor to ceiling.
Packaging Change Since 2023
Packaging has been a defining focus for the distillery. In 2023, Penrhos moved its gin range from glass to bottles made from 100% recycled aluminium, a move it describes as a UK first for a gin brand. The company reports that the change reduced its packaging carbon footprint by an independently verified 91%.

That transition sits alongside minimal-waste production and farm-based sourcing as part of the company’s environmental case for certification. The distillery has also received recognition for its packaging, including the Environmental Packaging Awards in 2024, while its gins have secured awards from the London Spirits Competition, IWSC, The Gin Guide Awards and Great Taste.
The B Corp status gives this packaging decision a wider context, connecting materials choices with governance, community and workplace standards rather than treating lower-carbon bottles as an isolated product claim.
A Growing B Corp Community
Penrhos joins a global network of more than 10,700 certified B Corps across 104 countries and 162 industries. In the UK, the B Corp community includes more than 2,700 companies, spanning organisations of different sizes and sectors.
Chris Turner, CEO of B Lab UK, says:
“Welcoming Penrhos Spirits to the B Corp community is hugely exciting. Its commitment to doing business differently will be an inspiration to others and will help spread the notion that success in business is as much about people and planet as it is profit.”
A Farm Made Drinks Proposition
For Penrhos, certification strengthens a proposition rooted in provenance and resource use. Converting surplus and visually imperfect produce into premium spirits offers a practical example of how food and drink businesses can make more of agricultural harvests while reducing reliance on conventional packaging materials.
The September release of Wonky Blueberry Gin provides the next public expression of that model. Combined with its recent Waitrose listing, the B Corp certification gives the independent distillery a credible platform as it brings its farm-made, waste-conscious drinks to a broader retail audience.
