Nippon Paint India has announced a strategic partnership with social enterprise Humble Bee aimed at strengthening India’s apiculture infrastructure. The collaboration focuses on improving the durability and safety of wooden beehives while supporting rural livelihoods and biodiversity.
The initiative brings together Nippon Paint India’s coatings expertise and Humble Bee’s precision hive manufacturing. The companies say the partnership is designed to extend the lifespan of beehives and support healthier bee colonies across rural regions.
Supporting the Foundations of Apiculture
Beekeeping plays an important role in agriculture through pollination, while also providing income opportunities for rural communities. Yet the sector in India still faces infrastructure challenges that affect hive longevity and colony health.
The partnership addresses these issues at the hive level. Nippon Paint India will provide low-VOC coatings designed to protect wooden beehives from weather and environmental wear.
Mr. Mark Titus, President-Decorative Coatings Business, Nippon Paint India, said, “The beehive represents productivity, interdependence, and resilience. By extending our expertise in durable and environmentally responsible coatings to this ecosystem, we are contributing beyond product performance, supporting livelihoods, strengthening biodiversity, and enabling long-term rural sustainability.”
Bee-Safe Coatings and Precision Hive Manufacturing
As a GreenPro-certified brand, Nippon Paint India produces coatings that meet strict environmental benchmarks. The company says its formulations are free from harmful VOCs and are designed to maintain a safe environment for bee colonies while protecting the structure of the hive.
These coatings will be applied to beehives manufactured by Humble Bee. The social enterprise operates India’s first precision-engineered beehive manufacturing unit at its facility in Varanasi.
The hives are constructed using sustainably sourced Southern Yellow Pine. Once coated with Nippon Paint’s weather-resistant formulations, the structures are intended to withstand India’s diverse climate conditions while maintaining a stable environment for pollinating insects.
Community Impact in Rural Regions
The project is also focused on strengthening livelihoods in rural and tribal communities. Many of the programme’s participants are first-generation women farmers who are being introduced to modern beekeeping equipment.
Painted and treated hives are expected to improve colony productivity and resilience. For small-scale farmers, stronger colonies can translate into higher honey production and more stable income opportunities.
Ms. Monika Shukla, CEO and Co-founder of Humble Bee added, “Every color on these hives tells a story, of a woman reclaiming her agency, of crops that flourish, and of biodiversity that revives.”
Addressing Pollination and Market Challenges
India continues to face a significant pollination gap despite strong demand for honey and bee products in global markets. The gap affects crop yields and limits the growth potential of the beekeeping sector.
At the same time, international honey markets increasingly require traceability and ethical production standards. Strengthening infrastructure at the hive level is seen by the partners as a way to support both agricultural productivity and market access.
By extending the lifespan of beehives and improving colony conditions, the collaboration aims to help address these pressures within the sector. Stronger beekeeping systems also contribute to biodiversity by supporting pollinator populations.
Field Trials and Future Expansion
Field trials for the coated hives are scheduled to take place over the coming months. These trials will assess coating durability, bee compatibility, and performance under different environmental conditions.
The results will help determine how the system performs in real-world beekeeping environments. If the trials are successful, the initiative is expected to expand into key beekeeping regions across India.
As part of the collaboration, Nippon Paint and Humble Bee have also developed a distinctive ‘Blobby’ hive design. The design reflects a shared interest in combining product engineering with community-focused initiatives.
