MM Packaging Deeside has opened a new round of apprenticeship vacancies, with roles available across engineering, finance, operations and estimating. The Welsh cartonboard manufacturer is looking to build on a scheme that has already seen nine recent apprentices offered ongoing employment after completing their training. Backed by the BPIF, the three-year manufacturing apprenticeship leads to a nationally recognised Level 3 NVQ, alongside First Aid, Fire Marshal and IOSH Managing Safely training. The intake forms part of the site’s continued commitment to developing local talent within the packaging supply chain.

A Structured Route Into Manufacturing

The apprenticeship programme is built around a combination of practical, on-the-job experience and formal study, giving participants the chance to earn recognised qualifications while working alongside established colleagues. The structure is designed with long-term career progression in mind, equipping apprentices with the technical grounding and confidence needed to move into permanent roles within manufacturing and packaging.

Supported by the BPIF, the three-year course culminates in a Level 3 NVQ, a qualification recognised across the sector. Apprentices also complete safety-focused training including First Aid, Fire Marshal and IOSH Managing Safely, reflecting the site’s emphasis on grounding new starters in both technical skill and workplace safety from the outset.

Track Record Of Retention

MM Packaging Deeside points to concrete results from its ongoing investment in apprenticeships. Nine apprentices who recently completed the scheme have been offered continued employment with the company, a figure the business cites as evidence that the programme is delivering a genuine pipeline of talent rather than simply a training exercise.

David Whitworth, Managing Director at MM Packaging Deeside, said:

“Some of the most talented people in our business started their careers as apprentices, so we know first-hand the impact the programme can have”.

“For us, an apprenticeship is about much more than gaining a qualification. It’s about giving people the opportunity to learn from experienced colleagues, develop real-world skills and discover where their strengths lie, all while becoming part of a team that wants to see them succeed.”

Addressing Sector Recruitment Pressures

The packaging supply chain has faced its share of recruitment and strategic challenges in recent years. Against that backdrop, MM Packaging Deeside frames its continued apprenticeship investment as a way of strengthening its future workforce while giving individuals a route into qualifications, experience and long-term careers within manufacturing and packaging.

David added:

“We are looking for enthusiastic, motivated individuals who are eager to learn and develop, and in return we offer the training, support and hands-on experience needed to build a successful long-term career”.

“We’re proud to be able to offer these opportunities to people in our local community. Apprenticeships provide an excellent foundation for a rewarding career, and we’ve seen first-hand how they help individuals build confidence, develop valuable skills and realise their potential.”

Building On Community Ties

The renewed intake reinforces MM Packaging Deeside’s standing as an employer rooted in its local community, with the scheme designed to give people nearby a genuine foothold in the manufacturing sector. As part of the wider MM Group, the Deeside site benefits from access to established training frameworks and industry connections that support apprentices through to qualification and beyond.

With engineering, finance, operations and estimating roles all open, the business is casting a wide net for candidates at the start of their careers. Those interested in applying or finding out more about the programme are directed to contact the company’s HR team by email.
