Saxovent Renewables and HIH Real Estate have formed a partnership to assess and implement renewable energy solutions across existing property portfolios. The companies will examine suitable buildings, focusing on roof areas and existing infrastructure. Three joint projects are due to enter implementation this year, while further schemes are already under development. The collaboration brings property investment and renewable energy project development together around energy generation, storage, charging infrastructure and heat pumps.
Using Existing Property Space
The partnership is focused on identifying energy potential already present within real estate portfolios. Rather than treating renewable generation as a separate development exercise, the companies plan to assess how available surfaces and site infrastructure can support individual properties’ longer-term energy strategies.
Roof space will be a central consideration, particularly where photovoltaic installations can be integrated with existing buildings. The partners will also consider energy supply and optimisation options based on each site’s needs, with the aim of using available space effectively while retaining economic viability.
Jan Steggewentz, Branch Manager and Head of PV Project Development at Saxovent Renewables, said:
“Making existing buildings part of the energy transition calls for practical, economically viable solutions. Together with HIH, we are creating the basis for systematically identifying the potential of available space and efficiently implementing sustainable energy concepts. In particular, existing properties offer enormous potential to combine renewable energy with existing structures, creating economic benefits for property owners, tenants and system operators while improving sustainability,”
A Modular Energy Offer
Photovoltaics form part of the planned offer, but the partnership is not limited to rooftop solar. The companies will assess a range of technologies based on the characteristics of each property, allowing energy measures to be selected around the building and its users.
This modular model includes battery storage, charging infrastructure and heat pumps alongside photovoltaic systems. For property owners, the model creates an opportunity to consider new income streams from large roof areas without treating energy infrastructure as a one-size-fits-all addition.
Saxovent Renewables develops, finances and operates decentralised generation facilities and energy solutions for commercial properties. Its operator model is intended to allow owners of large rooftop areas to gain income without investment or operational risk, while on-site consumers receive electricity generated from their own roofs.
Projects Enter Implementation
The companies’ first three joint projects will enter implementation during the year. Their work is intended to extend to several locations, providing a framework for assessing properties where renewable generation and associated technologies can be integrated into existing infrastructure.
For HIH Real Estate, the partnership adds renewable energy development capability to a platform serving real estate and infrastructure investments. HIH Invest manages assets with a total value of approximately 26 billion euros and has a presence at eight locations across Europe.
Fynn Rotzoll, Project Lead PV Rooftop at HIH Invest Real Estate, said:
“With Saxovent, we are adding another strong partner to our platform. Three joint projects will enter the implementation phase this year alone, with others already under development. We consistently take a modular approach to energy and see a natural synergy between real estate and renewable energy. Depending on the property, we integrate battery storage, charging infrastructure or heat pumps in addition to photovoltaics.
We are convinced that renewable energy will become an integral part of real estate, driven by sustainability requirements, the expectations of investors and tenants, and regulatory requirements. For our funds, this not only generates additional revenue but also creates opportunities to increase the long-term value of the properties, while tenants benefit from affordable, green electricity generated on site. Strong partnerships are essential to making this work – from developers such as Saxovent and general contractors to technical consultants,”
Linking Value And Sustainability
Energy efficiency, ESG criteria and security of supply are increasing considerations for property portfolios. The Saxovent and HIH partnership responds by placing renewable energy generation within the practical context of existing buildings, their tenants and their infrastructure.
The proposed approach offers a clear route for property owners to examine on-site generation alongside storage, charging and heating technologies. By pairing Saxovent’s renewable energy development work with HIH’s real estate investment platform, the companies are building a basis for projects that seek both environmental and economic value from existing assets.
