StormGeo Acquires Portchain for Just In Time Optimisation

StormGeo, part of Alfa Laval, has acquired Portchain to combine voyage optimisation with real-time port call coordination. The deal, closed on 30 October 2026, brings berth alignment software into StormGeo’s Voyage Intelligence offering. Portchain’s network connects shipping lines with more than 200 terminals, representing over 40% of global container terminal capacity. The combined capability is intended to help vessel operators align route and speed decisions with current berth availability, reducing avoidable waiting, fuel use and emissions.

Connecting Sea And Port Decisions

Portchain, headquartered in Copenhagen, connects container carriers and terminals through shared operational data. Its Portchain Connect platform supports digital alignment of vessel schedules and cargo volumes, while Portchain Quay provides a shared environment for berth, crane and workforce planning.

For StormGeo, the acquisition extends its Voyage Intelligence platform beyond routing, weather intelligence and vessel-performance insight. Operators can currently optimise voyages around arrival time, fuel consumption or a balance of both. Adding port readiness data creates the basis for decisions that account for conditions at both sea and terminal.

Where an expected berth time changes while a vessel is underway, the combined offering is intended to allow operators to reassess speed and voyage plans. This would bring a vessel’s estimated time of arrival closer to its estimated time of berthing, while providing terminals with more current information for planning berths, cranes and teams.

Kim Hedegaard Sørensen, Business Unit President at StormGeo, said:

“Maritime decarbonization calls for more than optimizing individual parts of an operation. It requires making efficiency more connected and actionable for our customers,”

A Shared View Of Readiness

Just-in-Time voyage optimisation depends on reliable information passing between shipping lines and terminals. Portchain’s existing tools bring together operational plans across the port call, while StormGeo contributes weather, route and vessel data that can shape decisions before a vessel reaches port.

The companies’ stated ambition is to turn changes in terminal plans into timely voyage decisions. Rather than arriving early and waiting for a berth, vessels could arrive closer to the point at which the terminal is ready to receive them. That approach supports more predictable arrivals and offers a direct operational route to lower fuel consumption and emissions.

The model also recognises that port calls depend on more than vessel schedules. Terminal capacity, crane allocation and workforce plans can all affect berthing times. Bringing this information into voyage planning gives operators a clearer basis for adjusting a voyage while there is still time to act.

Kim Hedegaard Sørensen, Business Unit President at StormGeo, said:

“By combining weather and voyage insights with up-to-date information from ports and terminals, we can help customers plan and act with greater confidence, improve efficiency from sea to port, and make meaningful progress towards their environmental goals.”

Portchain Continues Independently

Portchain will operate as an independent company under StormGeo for the next few years before being fully integrated into StormGeo’s portfolio. Existing Portchain customers are expected to see no disruption to their service, while the combined offering will be available through StormGeo.

The arrangement retains Portchain’s focus on coordinating carriers and terminals while giving the Copenhagen company access to Alfa Laval’s global reach. For customers, the planned integration joins two connected areas of maritime operations: the decisions made during a voyage and the readiness of the port at its end.

Niels Kristiansen, CEO at Portchain, said:

“Our ambition is to help make maritime operations more predictable, efficient and sustainable,”

Niels Kristiansen, CEO at Portchain, said:

“Joining StormGeo gives us the opportunity to bring voyage optimization and port call coordination closer together, helping customers get more value from the decisions they already make. Alfa Laval’s global reach gives us a strong platform to bring these capabilities to more customers and extend their benefits across the entire maritime industry.”

Supporting Maritime Decarbonisation

The acquisition strengthens Alfa Laval’s marine offering across fuel transition and energy efficiency, with StormGeo contributing routing and port call coordination expertise. Digitalisation and AI are expected to support simpler maritime operations as the companies develop their combined services.

For the shipping sector, the value lies in linking information that has often been handled separately. A voyage plan that responds to berth availability can reduce unnecessary idling, improve terminal preparation and give operators a more practical route towards operational efficiency and decarbonisation.
